30.11.20 - Gathering Items and Deconstructing

Image
Now that I have a better idea of what I want to do, I have started gathering materials to produce experimental work out of. I started with discarded wires and other objects from the workshop and began cutting them open.   I was really surprised at how beautiful the insides of many of these cables were, containing colourful wires in a dull grey casing. This ethernet cable was easy to take apart and retrieve the coloured strands from, and I held onto the offcuts of the grey cable to use in future experiments. This cable contained copper wires which are very hard to cut through, but I was able to cut away the outside to reveal the beautiful metallic colour inside as if opening a rock to find a fossil or amethyst. I discovered that the cross section of this cable had a flower shape inside and it reminds me that allusions to natural forms appear throughout much of the artificial world, and I wonder how I could involve this in my project. The next thing I dissected was this unwanted wind-up

27.11.20 - More Working with Words

Image
One particular word that I have decided to focus my project on is 'Nuclear'. To give me ideas of imagery and concepts to work with, I started writing as many words as I could think of that I associate with nuclear power onto masking tape and sticking them around the page in quite a disorganised, rough manner.   The next thing I did was produce some photocopies using colour effects on the printer and working into them. In this one, I changed the colour to red and drew on top with continuous line in black fine liner, scribbling my own imaginings of mutated faces that I think of as the offspring of people exposed to nuclear radiation in a future dystopia. For the next one I printed it in black and white then drew over it in red. I used photographs of the abandoned Chernobyl site to draw from and I think this would look really good if I had filled the entire page with the buildings and structures. *** After I had finished my lino cutting, I was left with lots of little pieces of li

Today I learned how to use the press and spent the morning producing lots of lino prints, experimenting with different papers as backgrounds and I have compiled them together on their own blog post. Lino Print Photo Gallery I'm happy with how they turned out because all of the intricate details show through and the incidental lines look natural like blades of grass between the flowers, yet the solid marks of the black ink are really bold and assertive. I also enjoyed testing out different papers and backgrounds, especially the tissue paper because it is so subtle but really enhances the image and creates a much more dynamic piece. I started off with earthy colours, using green sugar paper, brown parcel paper and white tissue paper to represent the organic imagery of the print, and then I experimented with brighter colours that allude to flower petals, particularly with the delicateness of the tissue paper. I folded a big sheet of news print into 8 sections and stuck down simple p
