27.11.20 - More Working with Words

One particular word that I have decided to focus my project on is 'Nuclear'. To give me ideas of imagery and concepts to work with, I started writing as many words as I could think of that I associate with nuclear power onto masking tape and sticking them around the page in quite a disorganised, rough manner.

The next thing I did was produce some photocopies using colour effects on the printer and working into them. In this one, I changed the colour to red and drew on top with continuous line in black fine liner, scribbling my own imaginings of mutated faces that I think of as the offspring of people exposed to nuclear radiation in a future dystopia.

For the next one I printed it in black and white then drew over it in red. I used photographs of the abandoned Chernobyl site to draw from and I think this would look really good if I had filled the entire page with the buildings and structures.

After I had finished my lino cutting, I was left with lots of little pieces of lino that had a really interesting texture, and I played with making words out of it. I think it has quite a harsh effect because they look sharp and splintering, but I wish they were a different colour because I cant help but be reminded of grated cheese or something. Alternatively I could have put it on a dark background rather than the table for a more contrasting image.
