Artist Inspirations - Image Boards

Over the course of this project I have accumulated a list of artists that I want to look at for ideas, so I decided to gather some of my favourite images from each artist and put them together in image boards that I can go to for inspiration. It also makes it easier for me to choose which artists I want to research in more depth.

Artist Research - Michael Landy

Image
'Michael Landy (born 1963) is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). He is best known for the performance piece installation Break Down (2001), in which he destroyed all his possessions, and for the Art Bin project (2010) at the South London Gallery. On 29 May 2008, Landy was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.' -  https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/michael-landy-2409 Michael Landy, Feverfew, from the series Nourishment, 2002. Etching on paper What I like about this image is the sensitivity of the lines and the fact that Landy has included the plant's roots, whereas in a lot of artworks of plants we only see the 'pretty' side of them - this gives the drawing an informative aspect like an illustration from a botanical book. Even the colour of the background which is off-white gives the impression of book pages, and I think if it was a very bright clean white it would detract from the naturalism and rawness of the drawing. There is a lot of emp...

28.9.21 -Fabricated Nature

Image
The title of our first project this year is 'Fabricated Nature'. I'm already excited about this because my work last year embodied similar themes, of human's role in the natural world, and I found it really enjoyable to explore. To begin with I wrote down my initial ideas on the subject and thought about what processes I might use. I'm into the idea of the relationship between people and urban birds, particularly pigeons. They are considered vermin, but guess who's fault it is that they are living in the city, instead of on the cliff sides as nature intended? It's both ironic and sad. Anyway, another bird that I'm interested in is crows and the stereotype that they collect shiny objects. I think its quite powerful to imagine a birds nest full of metal, and osprey nests are also mainly composed of human trash in current times, adding layers and layers every year until they are the size of cars. Magpies are also known to be collectors so I want to look at ...

21.10.20 - ADDITIONAL RESEARCH - Modern Landscape

Image
The Russel Falls, Tasmania. James Haughton Forrest, 1924   This landscape was done using oil on canvas  in 1924, by James Haughton Forrest at the age of 99. Unlike older classical landscapes, this painting is about nature rather than societal status. The only evidence of human life is what appears to be a cabin in the distance that looks small and insignificant, especially against the crashing waterfall and whitewater rapids which are an immense force in nature - more than enough to sweep the building away. Even with this sublime element, the overall feel of the scene is tranquil and idyllic with the naturalistic imagery of lush forests, a mystical hazy sky and a rainbow at the bottom of the three tiered waterfall. The snow capped mountain in the background uses very soft brush strokes with purple hues. The depth of field that this creates may owe itself to the invention of photography which we explored a couple of weeks ago, and I think it is extremely effective and beautiful...
