Photographing my Collections

To keep a record of some of my collections I took a series of photos, which I have also used as reference images for my drawings. I photographed a few groups of things, like TY Beanie Babies, Sylvanian Families, glass animals and Pokemon figures in a grid arrangement against a white background to create a sense of organisation that make the pictures look functional. I also took some close ups of a selection of objects that I thought would be good to draw from.

Museum of Witchcraft and Magic Research

As I searched through the museum archives, I made a note of the artefacts I was most interested in.   Artifact 3808 - Haitan Magical Box   This artefact is one of the most powerful ones I found. It gives me a sense of discomfort, I think due to its overall rawness and the crude nature of the materials. The texture of the wax in the human hair is really displeasing, especially the way it is used to bind the limbs of the doll giving a feeling of constriction and claustrophobia. The pins allude to voodoo practises while the animal parts are a potent reminder of death and decay, giving the item a sinister feeling of foreboding. Artifact 3814 - Nbedele Doll I find this item much friendlier looking and endearing. It reinforces my idea of working with fabric and I feel inspired to include other materials such as yarn and beads to make more interesting and textured pieces. CRITICAL STUDIES - artists who deal with the idea of Collecting

Ilya Kabakov collects large numbers of everyday objects and reconfigures them in groups. The way they are classified by type makes it seem informative and purposeful like a factual museum collection, showing how the context of objects can elevate or make them special; if the objects were displayed in the artists home or a domestic space they may be perceived as nothing extraordinary. 21.10.20 - ADDITIONAL RESEARCH - Modern Landscape

The Russel Falls, Tasmania. James Haughton Forrest, 1924   This landscape was done using oil on canvas  in 1924, by James Haughton Forrest at the age of 99. Unlike older classical landscapes, this painting is about nature rather than societal status. The only evidence of human life is what appears to be a cabin in the distance that looks small and insignificant, especially against the crashing waterfall and whitewater rapids which are an immense force in nature - more than enough to sweep the building away. Even with this sublime element, the overall feel of the scene is tranquil and idyllic with the naturalistic imagery of lush forests, a mystical hazy sky and a rainbow at the bottom of the three tiered waterfall. The snow capped mountain in the background uses very soft brush strokes with purple hues. The depth of field that this creates may owe itself to the invention of photography which we explored a couple of weeks ago, and I think it is extremely effective and beautiful...
