Mike Kelley Style Photoshoot
Mike Kelley's 'Ahh... Youth' piece inspired me to make my own version using old teddies from home, including some from my parent's childhood and some from my own - plus a recently acquired 90's troll doll from a car boot sale. I set up the studio lighting in a way that would reduce shadows behind the objects and used a white background like Kelley's image, which gives a professional atmosphere that elevates them from being worn-out old creatures to something special and celebrity-like. I used a tripod so that they are all to scale with each other, and I like the empty space around them, it's like they have room to breathe and think. I also had to adjust the ISO, white balance and shutter speed on the camera to suit the light and conditions of the space, then I used manual focus to get the sharpness that allows you to see all the details and textures.
After uploading the photos to the computer, I cropped them on photoshop and classified them into two separate series - one that has my parent's bears and one with mine. I had originally thought of having all of them together in one grid like Mike Kelley's but there was such a big difference between the aesthetics that I decided to separate them - for instance, the older ones have neutral, muted colours while the newer ones are very bright and obnoxious in comparison. I enjoy these photographs because the subjects are playful and soft but the style of the image is informative and serious, reminding me of passport photos and mugshots. It gives them a sense of importance and makes me think they would suit a museum environment because they are portrayed like artefacts.
For the next set of images I included the entire body of the objects and tried using a different background. I chose a soft pink because it reminds me of childhood and I think it's much easier on the eyes compared to the bright white, it gives a sense of warmth and character to the creatures. If I were to display them I think they would work as A2 posters, while the white background ones would look good on a smaller scale like little ID photos.
