This morning I did some research based on different types of mushrooms found in the UK. I used www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/types-of-mushroom/ and www.countryfile.com/wildlife to find images to draw from and I wanted to do some illustrative sketches using watercolour and pen. I think that these materials can create organic and sensitive looking drawings, which works great for natural subjects so I'm really happy with how they turned out.
In terms of the project, I wanted to look at mushrooms and toadstools because they pop up almost anywhere, in both real and in fabricated nature. For instance, I see a lot of fungi in Attenborough Nature reserve, which was once a gravel works site and still referred to as 'The Pit' by some locals. They are also commonly found in gardens, from small scale suburban ones to the sprawling gardens surrounding Wollaton Castle. The thing with gardens is that we construct them ourselves, but mushrooms appear on their own, like little reminders that we cannot control nature. I also find them very mystical and endearing even though some can be deadly poisonous, and I think they are a versatile subject to work with, offering many unique shapes and colours.
I would like to try making fabric forms based on these images
