21.10.20 - ADDITIONAL RESEARCH - Modern Landscape

The Russel Falls, Tasmania. James Haughton Forrest, 1924   This landscape was done using oil on canvas  in 1924, by James Haughton Forrest at the age of 99. Unlike older classical landscapes, this painting is about nature rather than societal status. The only evidence of human life is what appears to be a cabin in the distance that looks small and insignificant, especially against the crashing waterfall and whitewater rapids which are an immense force in nature - more than enough to sweep the building away. Even with this sublime element, the overall feel of the scene is tranquil and idyllic with the naturalistic imagery of lush forests, a mystical hazy sky and a rainbow at the bottom of the three tiered waterfall. The snow capped mountain in the background uses very soft brush strokes with purple hues. The depth of field that this creates may owe itself to the invention of photography which we explored a couple of weeks ago, and I think it is extremely effective and beautiful...

Artist Research - Michael Landy

'Michael Landy (born 1963) is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). He is best known for the performance piece installation Break Down (2001), in which he destroyed all his possessions, and for the Art Bin project (2010) at the South London Gallery. Etching on paper What I like about this image is the sensitivity of the lines and the fact that Landy has included the plant's roots, whereas in a lot of artworks of plants we only see the 'pretty' side of them - this gives the drawing an informative aspect like an illustration from a botanical book. Even the colour of the background which is off-white gives the impression of book pages, and I think if it was a very bright clean white it would detract from the naturalism and rawness of the drawing. Marcel Duchamp and Sherrie Levine

Duchamp is an example of an artist famous for their use of readymades. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/duchamp-fountain-t07573 Fountain is one of his most well-known pieces and pushes the boundaries of what constitutes art -  I find it makes people very uncomfortable and agitated when something doesn't live up to their idea of what art should be and they often use lines such as 'I could do that', 'My 3 year old could do that' or completely deny that it is art all together. Challenging preconcieved ideas of art seems like a brave thing for an artist to do because of the level of backlash it causes and rejection from the public - but I find that it is typically people not involved in the art world who are quick to say 'this is not art', I guess not everyone thinks creatively or open mindedly either, so whether we should listen to these opinions is questionable. Duchamp's Fountain seems like a humourous piece and it is weird to see a urinal in the mus...
