1.2.21 - Beanie Painting on Canvas
When receiving feedback for my work, I was encouraged to try painting more spontaneously from my mind rather than copying from images. I found a canvas at home and painted with acrylic, which I haven't done in a long time, depicting various faces of my beanie animals as I remember them.
This is the style of painting that comes naturally to me when I use acrylics so it feels personal and not really influenced by other people. I use quite thick and fast brushstrokes and layer up the colours until I'm happy with how it looks and I wanted to give it slightly spooky undertones which I began creating with the dark background.
The painting isn't complete because my project took a different turn, but I like it anyway and I find that my favourite colours to paint with are black, white, red and blue. I think the animals in those colours look better than the frog for instance, but overall the painting was fun to do and reminded me of how liberating it can be to draw from imagination instead of using references.
My comfort zone project touched on how the beanies are personal objects of safety rather than just a childish fixation, so I think the painting has a less cheerful tone than we might expect from the subject of soft toys because their meaning to me doesn't necessarily come from a happy place.
