10.1.21 - Observational Drawings

After we broke up for Christmas, we found out that there would be another national lockdown and that we would not be able to return to college until at least February. This means I have been unable to access any of the materials I have been working with and cannot assemble my final piece. So instead I decided to look at what I have in the home that I can draw from to relate to my project, and I produced some sketches and paintings of my cherry shrimp.

The focus of my project is the power of natural forms in an artificial world. I am interested in the way certain ancient creatures have endured and survived throughout the ages and may continue to do so after the demise of human civilisation. My horseshoe crabs embody the binary of natural vs artificial, and I wanted to continue making artwork based on crustaceans which, luckily, I had my very own at home. The cherry shrimp are really characterful and entertaining to watch, and I find myself taking lots of photographs of them. I used these as references for my drawings which I did in a loose style with pens and watercolours. Doing this helped me get back into feeling creative after the Christmas break and I am happy with the result, particularly the washy colours against the black marks of the pen.

The following are my own photos that I drew from.
