5.11.20 - Mono-Printing and Making Enlarged Object Replicas

Before going to the print room, I made a black and white photocopy of my water colour drawings so that I could trace over it to make my monoprints, and while I was there I made a few other copies using different colour settings on the printer, which I could work into.

For my first attempt I placed a photocopy over the paper and traced the shapes while trying not to lean on it which meant my hand was unsteady so the lines were wobbly, but the print came out really botched because there was too much ink so you can hardly even see the drawings. The next one came out paler but still looked very patchy and I didn't really like the composition so I tried a couple of larger drawings depicting only one object and I think these were much more successful. I tried to add tone to them by using a smooth edge of a tool to leave a broader mark, compared to the fine lines created when drawing with pen or pencil.  I also experimented with creating multiples by tracing a shape, moving the paper and doing it again in a few different places, and I think this would be a good way to design a repeated pattern.

This afternoon I made some clay replicas of the objects that I pressed into the large beetle. I thought I would try scaling them up on a three-dimensional level this time as I have already tried making flat versions, and this will allow me to make casts and produce lots of them which I could paint like I did with the snail and flowers earlier this week. Alternatively I could leave them white if I decide that looks best. Another thing I could do is place things into the mould before adding the plaster so that they are embedded in the surface of the object.
