13.10.20 - embroidery and workshop induction
To enable me to make a larger beetle so that it can easily turn inside out, I sewed together two pieces of the white fabric with visible stitching - again referencing patch work - and did the same with two more for the back.
After I drew the shape on, I stitched the patches using rough lines while making sure to arrange them so that they fit on the oval shape of the stag beetle’s back. I left gaps between them to form some negative space which makes its own pattern, mirroring the embroidery. The patches remind me of the armour-like plates that beetles have and imply strength and protection.

Although I was inducted in the workshop during my foundation diploma, I found it really useful to re-cap on how to use the equipment as well as the health and safety measures. I found the diagram simple to read and was able to use the machines to cut the wood to the right size, drill the holes and cut the roof, then sand it down. I don't think I will be using wood in my project. but I still enjoyed making the little house.
