09.10.20 - Embroidery Photocopies
I finished filling in all the sections with various stitches, at one point using two colours of thread through the needle at the same time, and overall I’m really happy with the result. I think it relates to comfort because it reminds me of a patchwork quilt, and a feeling of homeliness associated with hand-sewing, however the shape of it jagged, even with some saw-like edges - so I feel conflicted when looking at it.
I photocopied the piece and used the printer settings to experiment with different effects of colour and light. The ones I printed in solid red and blue, referencing the colours of thread I used, were not particularly successful for me because the red lines got lost, while the rest of them don’t show through very strongly. I used the two-tone setting to change the colour of the thread to green, blue, red and pink - in two of them I turned the brightness up very high, while in the other two I made it low. I prefer how the darker ones look because the coloured thread really comes out and reminds me of neon lights or glow-sticks in the night, while the pale ones just don’t really demand my attention. I stitched them together in a checkerboard pattern to reference the idea of patchwork and I like the look of the repeat pattern, but I don’t think this is something I will really use in my work.
