03.10.20 - Bug Sketches

On the left, I did a large sketch of the giant stag beetle and thought I’d turn it into a negative space drawing because the gaps between the legs and body parts looked interesting, with a combination of curved lines and geometric shapes the make up the natural form. I did various pen sketches on the other page, some I filled in with block colour and others I left as outlines. I added metallic gold gel pen to the linear wasp drawing to suggest it's natural colouring and I like the way this looks

I did some rough sketches of a cicada shell that I collected in France, testing out different thicknesses of pens and pencils, and I personally like the thicker black marker with the fast continuous line, but the larger pencil sketch is also good because I could use tone to emphasise the different facets of the shell.
