01.10.20 - Casting, tracing, sketching
My first step was to make a basic shape out of clay and I chose to make a snail as I have decided on the theme of natural history for my comfort zone project. Initially I gave it long eye stalks and feelers like the real thing, with its head posed upwards, but I learned that this wouldn't work in the mould so I simplified it to smaller thicker antennae and laid it down much flatter.
The moulding compound had to be cut into cubes and I found out that its it's really important not to put it in the microwave for too long. I used more clay to reduce the amount of space around the snail so that less moulding compound would be needed. i also made a smaller flower too which is quite flat so I can compare it to the more three dimensional snail and see which works best

Tracing the city with tape
At first I wasn’t sure about this technique because it was difficult to perceive the different angles of the buildings and put the tape in the right place, but I'm happy with how it has turned out. I think it's really interesting how the light comes through and you can create different tones by layering up more tape, and I like how it looks against a sky. I would like to photograph it against different backgrounds and see how it changes the image.

Sketching my beetles in pen and pencil
I like how the fine liner looks with the continuous line and I would like to take it further by adding watercolour paint. I tried using different thicknesses of pens and a range of pencils from H through to 6B, and I think the softer pencils worked best.
